Someday Never Happens

As part of my morning ritual, I like to take a few minutes to find a quote that speaks to me at that moment and share it with the world in hopes that it resonates with them as well. A few days ago, I found one that hit me like a freight train but I knew it wasn't the right time to post it. I wanted to think on this quote and let it sink in for a couple days until I shared it last night. It had enough of an impact to lead me to this week's blog post. The quote can be found below, it's getting it's own slice of this blog post because it was just too good! "SOMEDAY is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you." ~Tim Ferriss

After letting this one fester for a few days, I came to the realization that this quote is an example of a real problem in our society today that has affected just about all of us at one point or another. I'm not void from this either, because I used to only talk about all the things I wanted or wanted to do, but never actually had an action plan. Thankfully, I woke up from the waking sleepwalking that most of us do and decided to commit to change. I'm sharing this because I want everyone to go after what they want, because someday never happens.

Without even realizing it at a conscious level, many of us go through our days trying to get work done with all of the outside distractions begging for our attention. Before you know it, half the day is gone and you've been busy, but you haven't been productive. The first step to creating and manifesting your "someday," is to understand where your time is going now so that you know what to give less time to and what to give more time to. Today is not about diving into time, or rather, life management, but it is about helping you get on the tracks to your destination of turning someday into today.

Do a time audit with yourself, but be genuine in tracking where you are spending the minutes in your day. If you're not honest with yourself it will be very difficult to make improvements. I recommend not sugar-coating your weak points and accepting the wake-up call as a way to move forward. Once you know where your time is going and how much more you can have as you begin to design your life, the next step is deciding what you want and when you want it.

The real reason that some people say "someday," is because they aren't clear on their goals and don't have an action plan. If you're reading right now, I want you to pause for just two minutes and really think about what you want, why you want it, and when you want it. This exercise isn't about what others want for you, why you think you might want it, or hoping that it happens someday if things work out. This is about suspending disbelief for a moment and digging deep to ask the hard questions. If you could do anything, what would it be? Why would you want it? When do you want it?

This was just a quick exercise to get your brain focused on what you want and stay away from focusing on the someday conundrum. I recommend setting aside some time over the next few days to really get crystal clear on those questions. That final question may be the one you get stuck on, because you need to be realistic but also optimistic. The question of "when you want it" should be something that can be obtained through a massive action plan and consistent effort. It is meant to light a fire under your posterior and keep you focused on the goal, but if you say you want to achieve everything tomorrow then that's just ridiculous, these things take time.

Any dream without a deadline is just a wish that turns into someday; give your dream a deadline and it becomes a goal that can be obtained on any day but someday. I can't tell you what you want, only you can do that. Don't give into voices that have told you it's not possible, or that you're crazy, or that you'll fail. It's going to take hard work, there's no way around that. But the most exciting part is you get to meet a new person in the mirror when the time finally comes. You see, it's never about the goal, it's always tapping into your character and becoming the person it takes to achieve the goal.

Don't let your dreams go to the grave with you. We all get one life to live and I promise you we are not meant to just pay bills and die. Please, if you take anything away from this blog post let it be that you can do, have, and become anything you want; but it starts today, because someday never happens.

Follow your heart, it's the ultimate compass. I look forward to hearing from you as you embark on your journey to achieve your goals. Be a character, live with character. Take the leap.
